The claim by Robbie Williams that major record companies behave like ‘plantation owners’ towards their artists are clearly the words of someone with little grasp of reality.
“So Robbie, how many of your multi- millionaire celebrity chums have been beaten, flayed or mutilated recently?”
With all of EMI’s difficulties perhaps our concerns should be focused towards the 2, 000 staff the company will lay off rather than a bunch of pompous rock stars.
We all know the ‘Digital Revolution’ has thrown the music industry into a spin, but for artists to blame their own disappointing sales past or future upon this can ignore that they may have in fact lost whatever they once had.
Michael Jackson never complained about his employer Sony’s policies until sales of his 2001 ‘Invincible’ album proved that he no longer was.
Success somewhat inevitably leads most performers to lose touch with reality as well as a sense of their own career’s mortality.
They become further detached from their perhaps more humbler beginnings as well as to those people who would have once kept their feet on the ground.
Today’s icons are cast away as easily as the magazines and newspapers that once celebrated their talents, and most don’t always appreciate this.
Robbie's outburst is perhaps symptomatic of this.
His omission from the nominations for the music industry love- in that is the Brit Awards coupled with the inclusion of his own former band mates will no doubt stoke his anger further.
Well at least look on the bright side Robbie these things are cyclical.
It wasn’t that long ago when everyone was asking “Take Who?” rather than Take That?
Rest assured the public will soon tire of the novelty and after a while maybe the cheeky chappy from Stoke will take the plaudits and make it a beautiful world for himself once again.
